SOME OF THE BLUE JACKETS' HITS AND MISSES IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE NHL DRAFT:
HITS
LW Rick Nash
NO.1 OVERALL, 2002
The trade up from No.3 to No.1 was the boldest and best move of the MacLean era, and Boyd led
the charge to draft the franchise cornerstone.
D Rostislav Klesla
NO.4 OVERALL, 2000
OK, so nothing about Klesla screams "first-round draft pick." But he has been a solid player for
the better part of a decade.
RW Jake Voracek
NO.7 OVERALL, 2007
The first pick of the Howson era, Voracek began showing elite-level NHL ability last season and
looks to be a 60- to 70-point player next season.
MISSES
LW Alexandre Picard
NO.8 OVERALL, 2004
A classic 'tweener who excels in the minor leagues because of his energy and effort but lacks
the skill to create at the NHL level. Traded last season to Phoenix.
C Gilbert Brule
NO.6 OVERALL, 2005
Rushed to the NHL, was overwhelmed and might never become the two-way dynamo he was projected to
be. Was traded to Edmonton two summers ago.
RW Nikolai Zherdev
No.4 overall, 2003
Zherdev has elite NHL talent and a diva's attitude. This pick wouldn't look so bad if there
hadn't been so many star players on the board. 'Z' now is in Russia.
