Worth repeating

“2010-2011 could be an exciting year for CBJ fans as the team seems to be getting better and better. A couple of moves and they should be right there in the end.”

Bruins end shutout skid, but can't pick up win

Patrice Bergeron's goal with 52 seconds left in regulation helped Boston avoid a historic third straight shutout, but Michael Cammalleri scored in the shootout to give Montreal the victory last night.

The Bruins had not scored in 192 minutes, 6 seconds, dating to Vladimir Sobotka's goal at 7:02 of the third period against Edmonton on Saturday. The Bruins had not been shut out in three straight games since Eddie Shore and the 1928-29 squad scored just once over five games from Feb. 2-14, 1929.

That team went on to earn Boston's first Stanley Cup title.

The Bruins were less than a minute away from matching the ignominious feat when Bergeron, with goalie Tim Thomas pulled for an extra attacker, stuffed the rebound of Zdeno Chara's shot past Carey Price.

In the 700th game between the rivals, Price stopped 42 Boston shots for his first win in more than a month. Thomas made 25 saves, giving up only Glen Metropolit's first-period goal and Cammalleri's in the shootout.

Bergeron, who also had a goal disallowed in the second period, couldn't convert in the shootout and neither could Mark Recchi.

Red Wings 2, Sharks 1, SO

Detroit snaps San Jose's six-game win streak

Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored in the shootout to help Detroit snap San Jose's six-game winning streak.

Zetterberg also had a goal in regulation, and Chris Osgood made 33 saves for the Red Wings.

OTHER GAMES

Canucks 5, Wild 2: Darcy Hordichuk and newly signed Matt Pettinger each scored their first goals of the season, forming an unlikely pair to lead Vancouver over Minnesota.

Hordichuk scored his first goal in 50 games. Pettinger was signed off the street on Monday to bolster a roster missing seven players because of injuries.

Senators 3, Lightning 2, OT: Jason Spezza scored a power-play goal 4:17 into overtime to lift Ottawa.

Flames 2, Blues 1, OT: Dion Phaneuf's goal 2:50 into overtime gave Calgary the win.

Coyotes 3, Blackhawks 1: Peter Mueller scored his first goal of the season and Martin Hanzal added a goal and an assist for Phoenix.

Rangers 4, Oilers 2: Ales Kotalik had a goal and two assists, and New York ended a four-game road losing streak.

NOTABLE

• Bruins center David Krejci is out indefinitely because of the H1N1 virus.

The Bruins said Krejci, their second-leading scorer last season, will be kept away from the team until he has had no symptoms or fever for 24 hours.

• The NHL suspended Canucks defenseman Shane O'Brien for one game because his stick made contact with the New York Rangers' Sean Avery while both players were on their respective benches Tuesday. No penalty was assessed at the time of the incident.

• The Sharks placed defenseman Rob Blake on injured reserve because of an undisclosed upper body injury he suffered during the second period Wednesday against the Blue Jackets.

• The Carolina Hurricanes, in the throes of a 10-game winless streak, called up 2008 first-round draft pick Zach Boychuk from their American Hockey League affiliate in Albany, N.Y.

Boychuk will be available to play tonight against Toronto.

The 20-year-old has four goals and five assists in his first full professional season with Albany. He was taken with the 14th pick in the 2008 draft and played in two games with the Hurricanes last October before he was returned to his junior team.
