THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
It could be quite a trip to Las Vegas later this summer for Blue Jackets rookie
goaltender Steve Mason.
Mason, already named a finalist for the Calder Trophy (rookie of the year), has today been named
a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, given annually to the NHL's top goaltender. Minnesota's Niklas
Backstrom and Boston's Tim Thomas are the other finalists, based on voting by the NHL's 30 general
managers.
"It's an unbelievable honor," Mason said. "When you look around the NHL, and see the type of
goaltenders who play in the league ... to be considered in the top three is really special.
"I know I couldn't have done it without the players around me."
Mason, 20, finished 33-20-7 in 61 games, including an NHL-high 10 shutouts. On Dec. 31, Mason
became the first rookie goaltender since Glenn Hall in 1955-56 to record three straight
shutouts.
NHL awards will be handed out on June 18 in Las Vegas.
Mason could be joined in Sin City by Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock. On Friday, the NHL will
announced the three finalists for the Jack Adams Trophy, given to the league's top coach.
