Worth repeating

“2010-2011 could be an exciting year for CBJ fans as the team seems to be getting better and better. A couple of moves and they should be right there in the end.”

Special report: Where are the former Jackets?

Blue Jackets trade for help on power play
Wednesday,  January 14, 2009 4:50 PM
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
In an effort to buoy their struggling power play, the Blue Jackets today acquired forward Jason Williams from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for defenseman Clay Wilson and a sixth-round draft pick in the 2009 draft.

Williams, 28, is a right-handed shot who can play point on the power play. The Jackets have not had a legitimate right-handed shot on the point this season, which makes its difficult to set up one-time shots from the blue line.

He is a versatile forward who can play right wing or center and is expected to be in the lineup Friday night against New Jersey.

Williams has seven goals and 11 assists in 41 games this season for the Thrashers, who have faded from playoff contention and are looking to shed salary.

The Jackets will inherit about $1 million of his $2.2 million salary. Williams will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end. He has 73 goals and 103 assists in 337 career games. His best season came with the Detroit Red Wings in 2005-06, when he had 21 goals and 37 assists.

Williams is no stranger to at least one of his new teammates, Raffi Torres. The Jackets forward, while a member of the Edmonton Oilers, threw a devastating check that concussed Williams on Nov. 6, 2006. Williams was traded later that season to Chicago, where he remained until signing with the Thrashers over the summer.

The Jackets are hoping Williams can help the league's worst power play, which is operating at 11 percent.

The franchise will part with Wilson, 25, who has a goal and two assists in 12 games with the Jackets the past two seasons. He had been playing with minor-league Syracuse. The sixth-round draft pick is the one the club acquired last season in trading Jody Shelley to San Jose.
