Wisniewski Breaks Ankle (UPDATED)
James Wisniewski's first season as a Blue Jacket has taken a second unfortunate turn, and the season's not even at its midpoint yet.
Wisniewski suffered a fractured left ankle when he was struck by a fired puck at in the Blue Jackets' 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars tonight in American Airlines Center. He was walking on crutches and wearing a protective boot after the game.
The injury occurred at 7:38 of the second period, when Dallas forward Mike Ribeiro fired a slapshot from above the right dot. Wisniewski was skating across the slot, and turned to face the shot. The puck drilled him on the inside of the left boot, and he went down in a heap to the ice, his momentum carrying him below the goal line.
Two Blue Jackets players helped him to the bench, and two trainers helped him to the dressing room. He put no weight on his left leg.
Wisniewski, signed to a six-year, $33 million contract on July 1, has two goals and 15 assists in 29 games. He also has a minus-18 rating that ranks among the lowest in the NHL.
He missed the first eight games of the season after he was suspended for a preseason altercation with Minnesota's Cal Clutterbuck, who was defenseless.
